🥚 The Story

Tamagotchi = tamago (egg) + tomodachi (friend) in Japanese — egg friend!

Created by Aki Maita (a Bandai office worker who loved pets but could not have one) and Akihiro Yokoi from WiZ. They won the funny Ig Nobel Prize in 1997 because parents everywhere were buying eggs.

Released Nov 23, 1996 in Japan, then May 1, 1997 worldwide. THE toy fad of the late 90s. Over 76 million sold by 2010. Sold as a “nurturing toy for girls.” Everyone got obsessed anyway.

🐣 What a real Tamagotchi does

Not just feeding. A full life.

1. Life cycle — egg → baby → child → teen → adult. Neglect it and you get an angel or a gravestone. They added death to make it “one step closer to reality.”

2. Needs (it beeps in class)

• Hunger — meal + snack. Too many snacks = chubby + sick
• Happiness — play
• Poop — clean or it gets sick
• Sickness — skull, needs medicine
• Sleep — lights out. Grumpy if you wake it
• Discipline — it beeps for no reason. Scold it. Good discipline = cuter adult
• Games — left/right guesses for happy points

3. Evolution — good care = Mametchi. Bad care = Kusatchi blob. Kids reset twenty times.

4. Modern ones — infrared marriages, jobs, shopping. In 2023 people held 162 Tamagotchi weddings in one hour.
